JAlbum Enters Free Album Hosting Market
JAlbum, a free, cross-platform Web photo album software and photo gallery software is now offering a free album hosting service. Registering for a free account will give you 30 MB of storage, 2 GB of bandwidth per month, and your own URL (yourname.myjalbum.net). For a price of €20 per year, you’d get a premium account with 1 GB of storage, 10 GB of bandwidth per month, and your own URL. If you’re the power user type, €100 per year would entitle you to a whopping 10 GB of storage, 100 GB of bandwidth per month, and your own URL.
So what’s the catch with the album hosting service? Well, you have to use the JAlbum software to be able to upload and publish photos. Fortunately, the program works in several platforms including Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, and Solaris. It requires Sun Java installed so you can take advantage of its full functionality (such as publishing photos to your own URL). For a quick info, visit JAlbum’s FAQ page.
— Edit —
A follow up e-mail from a JAlbum.net representative stated that you can use any SFTP client when uploading photos to the album hosting service, not just the JAlbum software.
It’s unclear whether SFTP refers to the file transfer protocol with tunneling capabilities (Secure FTP) or the traditional one which transmits data in clear text (Simple FTP), but one thing’s for sure. The service can use other software besides JAlbum and it uploads photos through FTP.

PRESS RELEASE
Stockholm, October 3rd, 2007JAlbum Enters Flickr and Webshots Territory
Today, JAlbum releases a free hosting alternative for your pictures. With 8 million published albums, the free JAlbum software is one of the most popular tools in the world for producing web photo albums. Although the nature of JAlbum, being a desktop software, differs from
major players like Flickr and Webshots it is now equally an easy and free way to share pictures online. Three million photo sharing enthusiasts use JAlbum to publish web photo albums. These users have had to find their own hosting solution for their albums, which has limited the JAlbum user base towards the more tech-experienced. With the new hosting alternative, JAlbum is
opening up for a much broader market, simplifying the process of publishing photo albums to a few easy clicks. The free account holds 30 MB and fit 200 pictures to start out with. Users will also be able to upgrade their account for more storage.A Lot More Expression
Most photo sharing sites have only one album look. With JAlbum, you set the look and feel of the album to fit your photos and the rest of your web site. Everything is customizable; you can resize thumbnails, write descriptions to every picture the way you want, choose color themes, add music and more. “- This is a big step for JAlbum, enabling anyone to publish web albums. I believe people who care about the appearance of their photo albums will find JAlbum a great fit for their needs”, says founder David Ekholm.Stockholm based JAlbum AB was founded in the fall of 2006. The first version of JAlbum was released as a hobby project by founder David Ekholm in 2002. The JAlbum software is started every 5 seconds somewhere around the world and has been granted numerous awards from respectable companies like Softpedia, About.com, Download.com and Tucows.

Great service for uploading photo’s! A lot of hosting providers also allow the user to resell some of their bandwidth and space on their server to other users. This is one of the main advantages of paying for a hosting service, not to mention all the extra space and bandwidth you get.
