Wordpress 2.7 Released. Dashboard Revamped!

The dashboard of Wordpress’ previous version wasn’t really an attraction even if it boasted a new and improved user interface design. Version 2.7 however, is I think a huge leap forward. With the dashboard’s 2-column layout, a drag-n-drop functionality, Ajax-driven menus, and a simpler color palette, I would say that the user interface Wordpress has today is much easier to use. A classic left navigation menu, combined with a nifty set of icons allowed for the Dashboard to be compressed so as to be usable on small screens.
The upgrade process is one thing that Wordpress still needs to work on. A quick visit to the forums still show upgrading woes here and there. In my case, the widgets broke. It was a good thing though, because I was forced to look at the code and trace where the problem was. It turned out that my good old widgets.php in the /wp-includes folder, which I’ve been keeping since version 2.3 for accessibility’s sake has finally given up. The newer code base gave errors to my theme’s widget administration page and it compelled me to tinker with my XHTML and CSS code once more to fix some design issues.
Fortunately, I was able to survive the upgrade without losing my theme’s conformance to Section 508 Accessibility as well as XHTML Transitional and CSS 2.1 Standards.
If you have similar experiences or head-bangin’ fixes, feel free to share them with us.

Well, congratulations on the upgrade. I have upgraded all the blogs that I manage to WP2.7 since I really liked it, but still, I’m looking for more added features as time passes by.

December 21st, 2008 at 20:39
So far, I haven’t any problems upgrading my wordpress till 2.6 but I am afraid to upgrade now just to incompatibility issues. I can’t afford that at the moment because I am pretty busy with content stuff but I’ll be implementing it on my newly registered domain. Thanks for sharing your experience.
December 23rd, 2008 at 5:08
I have been using wordpress 2.7 since last month and found that it’s very better than older version and can give a competition to Drupal.
December 23rd, 2008 at 18:57
Cool! Word Press is going on updating and bringing in new features and making things easy. Guess that is the most popular now.
December 31st, 2008 at 2:57
Oh.. a new version of wordpress..i can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing. Happy new year.
January 2nd, 2009 at 2:04
I have only just started using Wordpress myself, but I have found the dashboard amazing! I love how easy it is to use! So much better than any other thing like that I have seen.
January 8th, 2009 at 5:13
Big improvement for Wordpress. I would just like to see the forums improve now. Still big problems there.
January 8th, 2009 at 5:18
Wordpress 2.7 is nice. Love the drag and drop function and the interface is a lot easier to use now. Well done.
January 11th, 2009 at 15:42
WP 2.7 is the bomb! I waited a month before using it and it took awhile to learn the new layout but it was a huge improvement!
January 13th, 2009 at 4:55
I’ll upgrade as soon as the plugin is fixed. Thank you so much.
January 13th, 2009 at 5:45
I don’t want to upgrade unitll all the problems se meto be worked out..
January 16th, 2009 at 3:47
I have upgraded Wordpress 2.7 and I am loving the dashboard interface and navigation.I think that the new WP version works well with most popular WP plugins.
January 17th, 2009 at 8:32
I upgraded as well - the new navigation is miles better.
My only concern is that Wordpress MU won’t get this for a while yet - and some of my blogs are on sites that use that.
Its confusing me to swtich from one to the other - but that is probably just me.

This new upgrade save time and allows to post faster than the older versions, I really like the new dashboard it looks more professional and all tools are available in the front page
January 22nd, 2009 at 15:10
With it I got response helper functions - wp_remote_retrieve_headers(), wp_remote_retrieve_header(), wp_remote_retrieve_response_code(), wp_remote_retrieve_response_message(), and wp_remote_retrieve_body().
WordPress 2.7 vient de sortir en beta 1, apres plusieurs journées de débuggage intensif. Les principaux changements portent sur l’interface d’administration, nom de code “CrazyHorse”, qui a fait beaucoup parler d’elle……
Even, I didn’t really have this line “if (version_compare($wp_version, ‘2.5?, ‘>=’))” but I had “if ( strpos($wp_version, ‘2.5?) !== false || strpos($wp_version, ‘2.6?) !== false )” so I added “|| strpos($wp_version, ‘2.7?) !== false ” in the if and it now works.
January 22nd, 2009 at 16:58
Congratulations for the update, I like 2.7 very much!
January 24th, 2009 at 1:25
At first I did not like the dashboard menu in a left sidebar. But I had not yet discovered that one could collapse it to make it all fit on the screenview. So now I love the new dashboard.
January 26th, 2009 at 17:39
The dashboard of wordpress 2.7 is really gud and easy to use.
January 26th, 2009 at 21:15
I still like the old interface… the new one seems so slow especially in changing the theme and in adding photos.
January 26th, 2009 at 23:23
WP 2.7 is better than previous versions in many ways.
January 28th, 2009 at 2:09
Honestly I prefer the Previous version of Wordpress. I just like to keep things the same, don’t like to change thigs around so much.
January 29th, 2009 at 17:11
Wordpress 2.7 rocks! I love the turbo features that allow you a faster loading! Awesome! Well, I just always get amazed by how GREAT stuffs I can get for free in the internet. (Great stuff never come free in the real world)
January 30th, 2009 at 19:39
Wordpress upgrade is pretty easy except the ramifications with various plugins… I’ve held off on 2.7 and at some point, i’ll review the plugins I use to make sure others report they work then go through with it.
January 30th, 2009 at 21:57
I love WP 2.7 . But the classic css of wordpress is darn dead.

Wow! they sure do work fast, the beauty of massive open-source involvement.
The new features are great, there have been so many amazing plugins created over the years that should always have been incorporated - it seems they’re taking some real notice.
Plus the user interface looks real nice (not that there was anything wrong before). Can’t wait to check it out
Thanks for the insight!

On December 10th, 2008, WordPress Version 2.7, named for American jazz great John Coltrane, was released to the public. For more information on this extensive enhancement and bug-fix release, read the Development Blog and see the Changelog for 2.7.
February 7th, 2009 at 3:38
I tried the upgrade but one of my favorite plugins wouldn’t work so I reverted back to the previous install. I’ll upgrade as soon as the plugin is fixed.

We have also tried to implement that by merging old data for our articles but its always giving some missing plugins error.
But though i like new word press control panel too smooth
February 16th, 2009 at 1:50
What made me use Wordpress are the variety of plug ins that can be installed on it. These plug ins have been very useful to me. and wordpress is now even better, it’s even more secure. There had been some security problems in the past, but i guess it has been taken cared of with this new release.
February 18th, 2009 at 1:04
I think the new WP 2.7 is far better than the previous versions. Love WP because its getting better and better and you can use it for almost every project.
February 18th, 2009 at 19:13

February 19th, 2009 at 5:14
I LOVE the latest Wordpress version. The revamp of the dashboard was wayyyyy overdue. It also appears to be very stable (unlike some of the other upgrades!)
February 26th, 2009 at 17:36
Hi, i have a free wordpress blog. I have added the widgets that come in the widget section. But how do i add widgets that are from third parties such as clustrmaps? If free wordpress blogs don’t allow that, which free blog service allows that ?
February 26th, 2009 at 21:44
I have only just started using Wordpress myself, but I have found the dashboard amazing! I love how easy it is to use! So much better than any other thing like that I have seen.

I am wanting to update my old 2.2.2 wordpress to the current 2.7 version. How would I go about doing that? Do I need to log in to my cpanel for that?
February 28th, 2009 at 2:43
The new and improved Wordpress 2.7 is a huge upgrade from Wordpress 2.3. I’ve been using this on my blogs and have no complaints so far. Upgrading was a bit of a hassle but once you get up and running, you wont look back.
March 3rd, 2009 at 9:08
I still need to upgrade. Thanks for the info!
March 3rd, 2009 at 11:08
Whew.. excellent post… i wonder how i am gonna upgrade my current wordpress version.. any idea? thanks anyways…
March 4th, 2009 at 16:36
Do you know that there is a new plugin uninstall in WordPress 2.7 that allows a plugin to uninstall itself, when user deletes the plugin. There are two uninstall methods that the plugin can implement and one is by creating a file in the base plugin directory named uninstall.php and storing the uninstall code there.
March 5th, 2009 at 12:22
Actually i have no much knowledge about the WP.Please share about the WP that how we easily used in make a new website and something about WP installation.

March 24th, 2009 at 19:00
Yeah really this WordPress plugins lets you know of potential plugins compatibility issues by adding the WordPress versions your current installed plugins are compatible with. So, instead of upgrading and trying to find out which ones are broke, we can see ahead which ones could give us problems.
March 25th, 2009 at 12:34

Nice wordpress article. I’ve been reading up on wordpress and the many plug-ins it has. It’s been a pretty stable application and my server hasn’t had any trouble with it. The spam fighting software askimet has done a good job too. The only thing I didn’t like about it is you have to modify it for “dofollow” to help promote visitors. Otherwise great app. ~Phil
March 27th, 2009 at 9:23
I need to upgrade, but it is very complicated and I’m not sure that it is worth it. Is Wordpress 2.7 that much better?
March 27th, 2009 at 13:41
I am happy to see this. Stick to the ‘popular’ plugins their plugin designers get ‘group’ feedback quickly. And remember they can also cause conflicts among each other and cause your site to crash.
March 27th, 2009 at 16:17
I’m going to migrate from blogger to wordpress in a week. I really excited because I’ve been with blogger for 3 years already. I’ve been hearing a lot of good things about wordpress so I think I wont miss blogger that much. Hehe.
March 27th, 2009 at 18:24
I am a government servant. I get an OK package every month and fortunately I am able to make ends meet just a little better than what I was a few years ago. With fuel prices down and inflation under control I have not felt any adverse effects of the recession now. In future will this recession affect me and how do I prepare for it?

Thanks for the share techie and about the 2,7 editions I found quite difficulty to verified it with W3C somehow,I really dont know tehcnical thing about coding
March 31st, 2009 at 12:42
I say this because you may really, really want that functionality but it may come with more than just ‘turn it on’ (it may need more in-depth configuring) or it might just not work for some reason. If I happen to know how to configure it, I am happy to help. Stick to the ‘popular’ plugins (especially those recommended by Wordpress.org), their plugin designers get ‘group’ feedback quickly. And remember (before you put in 10 or more) they can also cause conflicts among each other and cause your site to crash.
March 31st, 2009 at 16:28
Cool! Big improvement for Wordpress. Word Press is going on updating and bringing in new features and making things easy. Guess that It is the most popular now and a new version of wordpress. I can’t wait to try it.This new upgrade save time and allows to post faster than the older versions…………….

March 31st, 2009 at 18:30
I have been using WP 2.7 since September 2008. There are several new features I like a lot in it, and several more that are obviously useful additions even if not needed for every installation or use of WordPress. This is a list of ten such features.
March 31st, 2009 at 19:36
I would think you can do a ’stand-alone’ replacement with 2.7.
You would need to keep only the wp-config.php, as in the Upgrade Instructions but I would leave wp-content Folder alone - the stuff in there should be fine aside from any Plug-ins that may need updating, which you would likely be advised of anyway.
April 1st, 2009 at 16:41
I love WP 2.7they sure do work fast seems they’re taking some real notice. Thanks for sharing.
April 1st, 2009 at 18:21

Word Press is going on updating and bringing in new features and making things easy. Guess that It is the most popular now and a new version of wordpress. Big improvement for Wordpress. Thanks for the new version.
April 2nd, 2009 at 13:54
I would think you can do a ’stand-alone’ replacement with 2.7.
You would need to keep only the wp-config.php, as in the Upgrade Instructions but I would leave wp-content Folder alone - the stuff in there should be fine aside from any Plug-ins that may need updating, which you would likely be advised of anyway.
April 2nd, 2009 at 16:36
has an ideal infrastructure wp. nice…
thanks you..
April 2nd, 2009 at 16:58
Justin Tadlock delves into this nice topic and shows you how you can make your theme compatible with WordPress 2.7 as well as make it backwards compatibe with earlier versions. Aimed at theme developers.

Really great post and Thank you very much for a very useful information——————
April 3rd, 2009 at 9:22
Wordpress is indeed a great platform with tons of support. One of the items that many people fail to understand is how to optimize it for SEO purposes. Out of the box it is not very SEO friendly but that can be changed. Also the way information is posted on a wordpress site causes duplicated content issues. The good news is that if you know how to post content then you can really have a great optimized site.
Thanks for the post

April 4th, 2009 at 17:43
While checking for the version number of WordPress is one technique, this method is better because it simply looks for the actual function you’re going to use anyway. Never make assumptions based on version number.
April 4th, 2009 at 18:35
One thing to keep in mind while reading this article is that, this information was compiled from using the latest developmental version of WordPress 2.7. This means things may not be set in stone with further additions or retractions possible before the initial release.
April 4th, 2009 at 19:50
I am using wordpress 2.7.Really its very fabulous……………….
April 5th, 2009 at 0:30
I already used Wordpress 2.7 and it’s good. Well, i recommend it for people who do not update their Wordpress. Believe me it’s a good choice.
April 5th, 2009 at 1:33
I suggest checking out 2.71. I think it has some small fixes to the big 2.7 changes!
April 5th, 2009 at 1:48
Thanks for sharing, will update my plagins with the latest version. By the way, who of us are happy with the new version. Look kind of no so user friendly, I was really Ok with this, where the whole menu was in the top of the admin panel.
April 6th, 2009 at 12:19
Yeah really WordPress 2.7 responds our opinions regarding:
Where to put the search box
Where to put the Add New Post button/favorites menu
How to label the Future Publish/Edit Timestamp function
April 7th, 2009 at 19:09

Even better than stunning is the amazing amount of customizations options if the new interface isn’t to your liking, just hide, drag-and-drop, rearrange or resize the elements until it is.
April 17th, 2009 at 20:14
Glad your upgrade went OK. When I upgrade my theme was a mess.
Had to switch themes.
Pity.
April 18th, 2009 at 4:48
Yep, I’ve noticed that some themes get messed up when you upgrade, but usually the fix is within the styles sheet. I like 2.7 a lot better than older versions.
April 22nd, 2009 at 10:13
I love Wordpress themes. I think this new Wordpress 2.7 is also good.
April 23rd, 2009 at 18:04

I never knew that you didn’t have to pay finance fees for payday loans. My friend Joe from Cali sent me to this site http://www.nfoblogs.com/pbk.html that gave me a free guide on how it works. This is better than getting a bank loan because even they make you pay some type of fees, but not with this technique.
April 29th, 2009 at 17:17
WP 2.7 rocks ! I waited a month before using it and it took awhile to learn the new layout but it was a huge improvement !

“Last, but certainly not least, this may be the last time you ever have to manually upgrade WordPress again. We heard how tired you were of doing upgrades for yourself and your friends, so now WordPress includes a built-in upgrade that will automatically notify you of new releases, and when you’re ready it will download them, install them, and upgrade your blog with a single click.”
June 16th, 2009 at 10:01
I have upgrade to 2.7 and there are some incompatibility with installed plugin. Now i am moving to 2.8.
June 17th, 2009 at 23:43
If you are currently using WordPress 2.7 or 2.7.1, you can use the one-click upgrade feature built into WordPress to upgrade! The changes from WordPress 2.7 aren’t as noticeable as they were from 2.6 to 2.7, but it is always worth upgrading to the latest installation in my opinion.
June 18th, 2009 at 15:09
Wordpress always give news of upgrading and that shows in admin panel. I always do when i saw that. Upgrading is good thing as you are working on advance and latst features. Wordpress is making itself batter and batter that can be seen in wp blog.
June 18th, 2009 at 19:20
Yes the 2.8 is great. i have try it.

When you make a post I know you can set excerpts so they appear in your category pages instead of the whole post so as to avoid duplicate content on your blog.
I’ve set my blog to publish one post per page.
My problem is that I only get an excerpt to appear on my post page instead of the whole post.
I’m using Wordpress 2.7.

You have coped with this difficult task and I congratulate you on this. No, fortunately with no problems I encountered, otherwise I do not know how I would correct them.

WordPress, I think is the stepping stone of those who wanna be a web designer. With this you become familiar with what was going around web designs. There’s a lot of tutorials out there regarding wordpress. So it is up to us to search and learn. Thank for this post! this is a nice topic.

The dashboard of Wordpress’ previous version wasn’t really an attraction even if it boasted a new and improved user interface design. Version 2.7 however, is I think a huge leap forward.
I agree with this. However, don’t you think the older version also has its major advantages?
The upgrade process is one thing that Wordpress still needs to work on. A quick visit to the forums still shows upgrading woes here and there.
One of the best think I like about WordPress is that it is always upgrading itself. Don’t you think it is a good point? I’m sure that people wouldn’t really be 100% satisfied with all the upgrades WordPress has been doing, just like in any other blogging platform.
